Environmental Support for Finch West Light Rail Transit Construction Project

Environmental Support for Finch West Light Rail Transit Construction Project

The Finch West light rail transit (LRT) project will bring an additional 11 kilometers and 18 stops of public transit, while renewing aging infrastructure. The project aims to reduce travel and connection times and provide an economic boost for the community. The project is being delivered through a public-private partnership (P3) under Mosaic Transit Constructors General Partnership (Mosaic) and is owned by Metrolinx. Matrix has been working with Mosaic on several aspects of the project from the pre-construction phase and continues to support the project during construction activities.

Power Pole Preservative Fate and Transport Modelling and Risk Assessment

Power Pole Preservative Fate and Transport Modelling and Risk Assessment

As part of their management of environmental liability, a power transmission client wanted help evaluating the fate and transport of pentachlorophenol (PCP), creosote, and arsenate compounds from utility transmission line poles to the surrounding environment. Through modelling the current and anticipated behavior of contaminants along a transmission line, the goal of the project was to develop remediation criteria that were more reflective of the actual risk to receptors, and to provide a viable pathway to closure (i.e. obtaining a reclamation certificate) that would be acceptable to the regulator and industry stakeholders.

Air Quality Assessment: In Situ Thermal Oil Sands SAGD Facility

Air Quality Assessment: In Situ Thermal Oil Sands SAGD Facility

An oilsands developer requested to scope a potential increase in their facility sulphur dioxide (SO2) emission limit to allow for operational flexibility. To support this regulatory amendment request, Matrix Solutions Inc. conducted refined air dispersion modelling at the higher sulphur dioxide rate to predict air quality impacts of the change. The initial ground level sulphur dioxide concentration predictions were higher than expected under certain wind conditions. Matrix determined the problem was with the building shape and orientation of the steam generator stacks causing building downwash. Matrix worked with the client to redesign the building and orientation of emission sources to drastically reduce the predicted air quality impacts of the proposed change to sulphur dioxide emissions.

Lithium Brine Deposit Resource and Reserve Estimate

Lithium Brine Deposit Resource and Reserve Estimate

Our client was in the resource delineation and quantification stage of planning a lithium brine project in South America. As part of this exploration, it was recognized that hydrogeological aquifer modelling could be incorporated to refine mineral resource estimates and optimize production plans.

Flood Mitigation Study for New Hamburg

Flood Mitigation Study for New Hamburg

The Town of New Hamburg is located along the Nith River and is one of 27 municipal flood damage centres in the Grand River Conservation Authority’s (GRCA’s) jurisdiction. The Town was established and developed in the Nith River floodplain and is subject to routine nuisance flooding; in addition to significant flooding events in 1975, 2008, and most recently in February 2018 and January 2020. Matrix was retained to estimate average annual flood damage costs associated with existing flooding, develop and evaluate potential mitigation strategies, and provide support for two Public Information Centres (PICs).

We routinely lead characterization of stream morphology to:

  • Assess fluvial erosion hazards
  • Develop alternatives for erosion control in environmental assessments
  • Develop management strategies as part of land use planning (subwatershed, secondary, tertiary plans and site plans)
  • Assist in culvert/bridge design
  • Define erosion thresholds to inform stormwater management
