Patrick Todd (Principal Engineer) celebrated an exciting 25 year milestone with Matrix! We asked Patrick to share some of his career journey, insights, and achievements to date. Check out the full Q&A below. Congratulations Patrick!
Why did you choose a career in engineering?
My path to becoming an engineer was atypical. I did not have family or parents of friends who were engineers. My path started in high school when I was applying to university. My guidance counsellor said that I should apply to engineering because I loved science and math – so, I did! That was the beginning of four years of hard work and fun that eventually led to supervising the removal of portions of a concrete bridge deck 100s of meters above the Saint Lawrence River, to commissioning a secondary wastewater treatment system at a paperboard mill, to travelling across western Canada visiting an endless number of sites to conduct Phase 2 ESAs, to eventually becoming a Principal at Matrix.
What aspects of your role do you find most rewarding?
The technical challenge.
What are the key factors that have led to the success you’ve had in your career?
The key factors to my success were working hard and diligently, seeking the advice of mentors, and always learning and trying to improve my skill sets.
You’ve been with Matrix for 25 years. What has been the best part about working for the company?
The best part of working at Matrix has been the unlimited opportunities that have been provided to me to work with a multitude of talented people – leading to a fulfilling environmental consulting career. And, of course, Ski Day and Golf Day!
